Our scrapbook notes about Hikone

Hikone is north of Kyoto, pretty close to Lake Biwa. This town is worth a visit if you like temples and castles, but not worth a visit if you don't have much time in the Kansai region. The castles in Japan are fairly different to what I have experienced in the UK and Europe. They are fairly small with not a lot to see inside, therefore I argue that if you have seen one Japanese castle, then you've seen them all. However Hikone could be for you. It does host one of the four castles left in Japan, and perhaps worth a visit as the better castle in Himeji is under renovation. Also, look out for the town's mascot Hikonian. A white kind of bear costume, and quite famous in the region.
